Over the past
28 years, lovers, hippies, yuppies, hipsters, creationists and more attend the week-long
annual event Burning Man. So what is Burning man? Just a
bunch of hippies that enjoy getting trashed at a musical festival? A desert rave? A place
where people go to search for enlightenment? Others have said it’s a place that
they need to check off the list before they are 30.

My
definition is an adult’s dystopian Disneyland, nothing for 11 months of the
year, rebuilt and transformed for one month as a city, where commerce and the
mainstream do not apply and where everyone participates in one way or another. It’s basically a mecca for
artists, creatives and people from all over the world who come to express their
art in unimaginable ways. Revellers also
come to escape the real world, leave or burn their sorrows, grievances and
negativity.

My last
burn attendance was in 2011, so I’m going to share some of my experiences from
each of the sound camps. I will also touch on sound camps that are well known and followed. These sound
camps are non-profit electronic music and art collectives, some of which weren't there in 2011. The attendance in 2014 was just under 66,000 and it has been growing steadily since its inception.

Mayan Warrior

As is one of the leading art cars, Mayan Warrior is a visually stimulating, sound packed car driven straight from Mexico City.

Founded in 2011 and then launched in 2012, in my experience this is the most recommended stage by other sound technicians and punters alike. I had the fortunate pleasure of meeting DJ TENNIS, I asked him in terms of sound which was his favourite sound camp and he told me this was the one.

Mayan warrior used german company D&B Audiotechnik for their entire car fit-out, inside and out. A sound system which generated 70,000 watts of power covering over 3000 people. The outside setup included 16 full range speakers (8 x V12 and 8 x V8 tops) and 20 18" subs (10 B2 SUBS, 2 x 18" per sub). camping directly across from Distrikt in 2011, I failed to get much sleep as I was up most of the night and this
was a day party. The stage was a lot smaller back then and has grown ever since.

Since 2013, the system has been upgraded/powered by Funkworks who work out of Los Angeles. Cody from Funkworks explains that they opted to bring out 8 Funktion one F221's, 8 resolution 4's, 2 dual 15’s and 2 resolution 2's and, this worked out nicely for the 2013 Distrikt stage. However, for 2014, they retired the stage they had used for a few years and built a much larger stage to house the massive numbers of people they expected.

Come 2014, with more punters attending, the stage has been redesigned and the sound system has been upgraded to cover more surface area. Their solution was to use delay stacks. So in addition to the rig they brought out for 2013, they also brought out 6 dual 18's and made two delay stacks of 3 dual 18's with Funktion-One Resolution 2's on top to extend the dance floor sound not only farther back but, out to the sides as well. The end result was one of the premier sound systems on the Playa to come see and hear. In fact according to Cody, one of the days in 2014 a fellow came by looking for the sound tech/company that was responsible for the sound. It turns out that this fellow was Paul Oakenfold who wanted to personally thank them.

So here is the real info on the specs of the camp, the Funktion-One F221 are 21 inch drivers with 2 in each box. Each driver has 1500 watts each so, with 16 of them, that means 24000 watts of bass. The Funktion-One Resolution 4's are around 1100 watts each for a total of 8800 watts, about 1300 for the Resolution 2's (2600 watts for both) and 2 F215’s with 800 per driver for 3200 watts. Each driver in the dual 18's have a driver of about 800 watts and 12 of them comes out to 9600 watts plus a few QSC K12's to fill in the center and 1000 watts a piece. Which brings us to around 50,300 watts of sound.

This was a
pretty wild camp you’ll expect to some craziness such as people dancing in
cages raised in the sky by cranes, people going nuts with bongos and you may see the Robot heart bus parked nearby, and in some cases the system
plugged in for extra reinforcement. They usually build this bridge looking podium next or on top of the
dj booth to which you can stand or dance on. It looks kind of surreal when the
sun sets with the blue mountains in the background.

Lineup in

Inside the DJ monitors are two 18" subwoofers(V-SUB) with two E-12 and 4 E-8 full range speakers for the rest of the car.

The system has been engineered to ensure it runs effectively with proprietary processing hardware that prevents intermodulation of the signal before entering the Amps which in turn optimises the system performance by 15%. In addition because of the harsh effects of playa dust and heat the amps are stored in a perfectly sealed chamber with AC inside the art-car

In terms of the visual design of the car famous artist Alex Grey contributed to the project by painting the Warrior's face. As I listen to music and deal with speaker hire daily I've always wondered what was the current state of my hearing. I feel it's a hot topic and gets overlooked, I'm very passionate for music and sound and when reading up on international DJ Lil Louis permanently losing his hearing in one ear and when a friend explained to me that they he has been diagnosed with Tinnitus, I feel it's something that more people need to be aware of.

As suggested on the page, it is common for people over 25 to not able to hear anything over 15kHz, if you can't hear anything after 8kHz I would consider seeing a doctor.

TAKE THIS TEST make sure you use desktop speakers, listen for high frequencies, warning it may cause migraines ---------->>>>>>> Click Here - Hearing Test

I have always been careful protecting my ears when going to large events and even smaller gigs. Some tips that I usually use when I'm out are to wear ear plugs, or if I forget to bring them I would usually just get some paper tissue or ask for some standard industrial ear plugs from the bar. Standing back from the sound system also helps and if you don't have any protection, just stick one finger in your ear and give that ear a rest for 30 seconds then repeat on the other ear.

I personally use these EARrasers from StoreDJ, I find them quite comfortable to wear. They sit under my headphones and they have a small plate to amplify close by sounds, this makes it easier for me to speak to friends while I'm out. You can also opt for custom made ear plugs which are going to costs you more than $300, these type of ear plugs are made for musicians and sound engineers. They costs this much because they are molded to fit into your ear so you'll hardly notice them there, they decrease the dB to a safe level and they act as amplifiers for close range sound.

So whether you're a DJ, iPod listener, sound engineer, punter or a full time mother it is always crucial to take care of your hearing. This is not just for case for hearing loss but for hearing damage and injury.

With the speakers up high, I'm a 31 year old male and can hear everything up to 17kHz, next to me a 35 year old male could hear everything up 16kHz and next to him a 36 year old female who could hear everything up to 14kHz.

	At
Buzz Speaker Hire Sydney we were looking to increase our hire stock range with
some powerful 15’’ speakers under $1000 each. We shortlisted the 15’’ speakers in
this price range available in Sydney and performed an intensive full range test
to decide which we would add to our rental portfolio.

	Speakers
tested and their Australian retail prices:

Alto TX15 600-Watt 15" 2-Way Active
Loudspeaker $449

Alto TS115A 15" Truesonic 800W
Powered PA Speaker $479

Behringer B115D Powered 15" Speaker
w/ Digital Amp (Black) $499

Behringer B215D Powered 15" Speaker
w Digital Amp (Black) $599

Behringer Eurolive B615D 15"
1500-Watt Active Speaker $759

Behringer VP1520D Active 15"
Speaker $549

JBL EON615 15" Two-Way Powered
Reinforcement Speaker $699

Mackie Thump15 1000W 15" Powered
Loudspeaker $549

RCF ART 315-A MK3 15" Active
Two-Way Speaker $999

Yamaha DBR15 Powered 15" PA Speaker
$795

	The
test was conducted in three stages; the input volume was at 0db for each stage:

	1.Speakers at 50%

	2.Speakers at 75%

	3.Speakers at 100%

	The
test was blind to make sure each speaker was judged impartially, not on
perceived brand reputation, aesthetics or any other bias. We had three people
judging each speaker for frequency response, volume output and clarity.

	The
top two speakers were the Yamaha DBR15 and the RCF ART 315-A MK3.

	Not
surprisingly the Alto and Behringer speakers fell well short in both sound
quality and output.

	The
Mackie Thumps had a nice sound and good bass range at medium volumes but began
to limit and distort fairly early as the volume was pushed.

	The
JBL performed surprisingly poorly compared to the RCF and Yamaha speakers; the
volume output was not even close (it sounded almost half as loud!).

	Looking
at the manufactures specifications the JBL EON615 has a max SPL of 127dB vs
132dB for the Yamaha DBR15, in real terms this equates to almost double the
sound pressure and perceived loudness.

	The
RCF sounded crystal clear (almost to the point of sounding clinical) but with a
max SPL of 129dB did not have the same punch as the Yamaha DBR15. We also
preferred the warmer sound of the Yamaha.

	With
all the blind votes tallied the Yamaha DBR15 was the winner, closely followed
by the RCF ART 315-A MK3.

	With
it’s price advantage we were very please with the results. The Yamaha DBR15 is
a fairly new speaker and has received a lot of praise online, after
experiencing it ourselves we have to agree that in this price range it blows
its competitors out of the water.

	We looked long and
hard and believe we have the best prices in Sydney for all of our equipment. We
offer a BEST PRICE GUARANTEE! If you can find a cheaper price we’ll beat
it by 10%.

	The

	1.Speakers at 50%

	2.Speakers at 75%

	3.Speakers at 100%

	The
test was blind to make sure each speaker was judged impartially, not on
perceived brand reputation, aesthetics or any other bias. We had three people
judging each speaker for frequency response, volume output and clarity.

	The
top two performing speakers were the QSC KW152 and Yamaha DSR115.

	The
Alto BLACK15 has some very interesting features with the ability to manipulate
DSP, speaker delay, polarity, filter and EQ settings from a smart phone or
tablet via Bluetooth. You can set them up at an event and over the course of
the night refine the sound from anywhere in the room. The sound quality was OK
given the price but could not compete with many of the other models.

	Despite
being a best seller in this class the JBL PRX715 performed very poorly, like
its predecessor the PRX615 it has poor bass response with muddy mid to high
frequencies. We were also disappointed in the Mackie SRM650, it began to limit
very early and we were unimpressed with the frequency response.

The PreSonus StudioLive 315AI was disappointing when
considering the very high price. The manufacturer states: “Rather than take the usual brute-force approach to PA-speaker design,
the team designed a coaxial loudspeaker that would employ Fulcrum’s unique
DSP-based approach.” And you can tell, the volume output was not as high as
many of its competitors and it sounded very ‘digital’ to our ears. We were not
impressed.

	Both
offerings from HK Audio performed well and the 15XA had one unique feature, a Speakon
out port where a passive speaker could be attached and powered by the HKs
inbuilt amplifier.

	The
Yamaha DSR115 and DXR15 were both very impressive. Boasting fantastic clarity, very
high volume output and impressive frequency response. The DSR115 had the
highest overall volume output and was a close second in sound quality and clarity.

	The
overall winner was the QSC KW152, it had a slightly lower output compared to
the DSR115 but had the best frequency response and sound quality. It is very clear all throughout the
frequency spectrum and could be pushed very hard without any discernible distortion.

	When
using the QSC KW152 without a Subwoofer you can engage DEEP mode, which
significantly increases bass output. When used with a subwoofer you can engage
EXT SUB mode, cutting frequencies under 100Hz. This has two main benefits - firstly
it allows the KW152 to focus on producing mid to high frequencies, which allows
for greater volume before limiting. Secondly, it prevents phase cancelation or
muddying of the bass frequencies, as both the tops and the subs are not trying
to produce the same frequencies.

	We looked long and
hard and believe we have the best prices in Sydney for all of our equipment. We
offer a BEST PRICE GUARANTEE! If you can find a cheaper price we’ll beat
it by 10%.

the DSR115 but had the best frequency response and sound quality.

If you can find a cheaper price we’ll beat
it by 10%.

looking to increase our hire stock range with some powerful and portable 12’’
speakers. We shortlisted the premium 12’’ speakers available in Sydney and
performed an intensive full range test to decide which we would add to our rental
portfolio.

	Speakers tested and their Australian
retail prices:

Alto BLACK12 Black Series 12"
$1099

JBL PRX612 12’’ (Discontinued, old
stock): $989

JBL PRX712 12’’ $1099

Mackie SRM450 12" $849

Mackie SRM550 12’’ $999

QSC K12 12’’ $1199

RCF ART 312-A MK3 12’’ $942

Yamaha DSR112 12’’ $1279

Yamaha DXR12 12’’ $1079

	The test was
conducted in three stages; the input volume was at 0db for each stage:

Speakers at 50%

Speakers at 75%

Speakers at
100%

	The test was
blind to make sure each speaker was judged impartially, not on perceived brand
reputation, aesthetics or any other bias. We had three people judging each
speaker for frequency response, volume output and clarity.

	The top three
speakers were the QSC K12, Yamaha DSR112 and the Yamaha DXR12. Once price was considered we we were also very impressed with the RCF
ART 312-A MK3.

With all votes tallied the QSC K12
was the clear winner, being in first place for two of the judges and equal
first for the third judge. The QSC K12 offered the best sound quality, was
extremely clear in all frequencies and had amazing bass response. The volume
output was exceptional and unlike many of the other speakers it maintained
clarity even when pushed to maximum volume.

	The biggest surprise was the
relatively poor performance of the JBL PRX612 and JBL PRX712. After comparing
results we had all judged them as very poor in bass response with muddy mid to
high frequencies.

Out of curiosity we decided to put
the QSC K12 head-to-head with the larger JBL PRX615 and JBL PRX715. We found
the smaller 12’’ QSC K12 to have better low frequency response even compared to
the larger 15’’ woofer on the JBLs. Given the popularity of the JBL offering we
were very surprised. The JBL PRX715 was a clear improvement over the older
generation JBL PRX615 and both JBLs did offer slightly more volume when pushed
but the clarity and response of the QSC K12 through all frequencies was undeniably
superior.

We judged the speakers purely on
sound quality but as a bonus the QSC K12 offers some fantastic features missing
on most of its competitors. Great input options – XLR, ¼ inch TRS Jack and RCA,
an inbuilt two channel mixer, 7.5 degree pole mounted tilt (to aim the sound
down at your audience), inbuilt limiter to reduce the risk of damage to the
speakers, free 6 year warranty, custom tote bag to protect the speakers during
transport and an attractive and professional appearance.

	While discussing added features a
special mention must go to the Alto BLACK12 Black Series. These speakers performed
well in sound response, have solid construction and give the user the ability
to manipulate DSP, speaker delay, polarity, filter and EQ settings from a smart
phone or tablet via Bluetooth. You can set them up at an event and over the
course of the night refine the sound from anywhere in the room.

We looked long and hard and believe we have the best prices in Sydney for all of our equipment. We offer a BEST PRICE GUARANTEE! If you can find a cheaper price we’ll beat it by 10%.
